About Ô Ăn Quan

Ô ăn quan (Mandarin Square Catching) is a traditional Vietnamese children's game. While its exact creator remains unknown, it is believed to have originated from the ancient Mancala family of games in Africa and the Middle East centuries ago.

Played on a board with 10 'dân' (citizen) pits and 2 'quan' (mandarin) pits. Players take turns sowing stones. If a sow ends before an empty pit followed by a filled pit, the player captures the filled pit. The game ends when both 'quan' are captured. The player with the most points wins.
Deeply ingrained in Vietnamese rural culture, it is usually played on the dirt with pebbles or seeds. The game teaches strategic thinking, mathematics, and has inspired many poems, songs, and cultural arts reflecting the agricultural life of Vietnam.

The 3 Golden Rules

3

- 1Sowing: Pick up all stones from one of your pits and drop them one by one in adjacent pits in either direction.
- 2Capturing: If the last stone lands in a pit followed by an empty pit, you capture the stones in the next pit.
- 3Ending: The game ends when both Mandarin pits are captured. The player with the most stones wins.
